SUMMARY:StoryFest 2023: Eliza Reid - Monday May 8
DESCRIPTION:Eliza Reid\, the First Lady of Iceland\, examines her adopted homeland’s attitude toward women—the deep-seated cultural sense of fairness\, the influence of current and historical role models\, and\, crucially\, the areas where Iceland still has room for improvement. Reid’s own experience as an immigrant from small-town Canada who never expected to become a first lady is expertly interwoven with interviews with dozens of sprakkar (“extraordinary women”) to form the backbone of an illuminating discussion of what it means to move through the world as a woman\, and how the rules of society play more of a role in who we view as “equal” than we may understand. Secrets of the Sprakkar is a powerful and atmospheric portrait of a tiny country that could lead the way forward for us all. \nTickets are $20.00 each and can be purchased electronically here and are available at Que de Bonnes Choses (484-D Main\, Hudson)  \nWe wish to thank Alena Kirby\, Centre Décore Hudson\, Hudson Family Health Centre\, Janet Ellerbeck\, Embers\, La Plantation\, Maison Rose\, Penny Petz and Town of Hudson for their partnership. \n

SUMMARY:StoryFest 2022: Iain Reid
DESCRIPTION:We round out our offering for the 2022 StoryFest season with Iain Reid\, a novelist\, memoirist and screenwriter from Ontario who won the RBC Taylor Emerging Writer Award in 2015. His latest novel\, We Spread was released to great acclaim at the end of September. This novel has already become one of 2022’s top books by Indigo and a New York Times best-seller. \nIain Reid’s novels include the New York Times bestselling debut\, I’m Thinking of Ending Things and Foe\, which is being adapted for film\, starring Saoirse Ronan; with Reid cowriting the screenplay. We Spread explores conformity\, art\, productivity\, relationships\, and what it means to grow old. “Reid combines magnetic character development with clipped\, eerie prose in this masterfully crafted psychological thriller that will keep the reader guessing until the very last word on the final page.” — Booklist \nTickets are $20.00 each and can be purchased electronically here and are available at Que de Bonnes Choses (484-D Main\, Hudson) or at Centre Décor Hudson (521 Main\, Hudson). \nWe thank Maison Rose and Hudson Village Theatre for their sponsorship towards this Event.

SUMMARY:StoryFest 2022: Writers' Workshop with David Heti
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: AS OF NOVEMBER 2\, THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT!\nNo\, Seriously! Comedy Writing. \nYou might laugh\, but this five-hour immersion (with breaks) will be a combination of theory and workshopping. The goal is for the participants to deepen their appreciation of humour\, learn how better to transfer their own sense of humour to the page\, and in general become stronger\, more confident\, nuanced\, discerning and just plain funnier writers no matter what their writing genre or level of experience. \nBeginning with a survey of classic theories of humour examining the essence of the comedic\, the workshop will then take a critical analysis of several exemplary comedic works across various literary forms. Time will then be spent on in-class writing (and re-writing) exercises\, as well as a discussion of general comedy writing strategies and approaches. Students are encouraged to bring along any pieces of writing they are working on\, but this is by no means essential. \nDavid Heti is a stand-up comic and humour writer who has toured throughout North America\, released two comedy albums\, and written for the CBC and The Comedy Network. He teaches comedy writing at McGill and Toronto’s Flying Books School of Reading and Writing. He also holds degrees in Philosophy and Law. \nThe workshop takes place at Greenwood and includes a light lunch. Space is limited. \nTickets are $80.00 each and can be purchased electronically here. If you would like to buy this ticket as a cash transaction\, please contact us at: history@greenwoodcentre.org or 450-458-5396. \nWe thank Cardinal Hudson for their sponsorship towards this event.
