DESCRIPTION:Eliza Reid\, the First Lady of Iceland\, examines her adopted homeland’s attitude toward women—the deep-seated cultural sense of fairness\, the influence of current and historical role models\, and\, crucially\, the areas where Iceland still has room for improvement. DESCRIPTION:For children of all ages\, Frank Hicks reads his recently released book: Pugsley the Peculiar Puffin on the lawn at Greenwood. This children’s book is based on the true story of a wayward puffin from Newfoundland Canada that somehow landed in Montreal. It is also a story of the people who offered their help\, the environmentalists who offered their expertise and the professionals who offered their time and resources\, all working together to bring this puffin back home. \nWe’ll have copies of the book available to be signed by the author. All proceeds go to Le Nichoir Wild Bird Conservation Centre\, also located in Hudson. Frank’s antique toy collection will complementarily be on display for any curious attendees. \n  \nDans les jardins de Greenwood\, Frank Hicks fera la lecture de son livre tout récemment publié\, Pugsley the Peculiar Puffin. Cet ouvrage jeunesse se fonde sur l’histoire vraie d’un macareux moine de Terre-Neuve\, qui s’est égaré par hasard à Montréal. Il relate l’action concertée des environnementalistes\, professionnels et des autres bienfaiteurs qui ont travaillé d’arrache-pied pour ramener Pugsley chez lui.\n\nDes copies du livre seront en vente sur place\, et l’auteur les dédicacera sur demande. Les profits seront versés au Centre de conservation des oiseaux sauvages Le Nichoir\, qui se situe également à Hudson. DESCRIPTION:ANITA ANAND is a Montreal author and translator. Her collection of short stories entitled Swing in the House won the 2015 QWF Concordia University First Book Award and was nominated for a couple of others. Her novel\, A Convergence of Solitudes was a finalist in 2022 for the Paragraphe Hugh MacLennan Prize for Fiction and was nominated for a 2022 Foreward Indies Award; it has won the 2023 IPPY gold medal in the category of Multicultural Fiction and is also shortlisted for this year’s Ontario Library Association’s Evergreen Award. Her translation of Nirliit\, a novel by Juliana Léveillé-Trudel won her a nomination for the John Glassco prize for a first translation. As the Andes Disappeared\, Anita’s translation of Là où je me terre by Caroline Dawson\, will be in bookstores in November. DESCRIPTION:WAUBGESHIG RICE grew up in Wasauksing First Nation on the shores of Georgian Bay\, in the southeast of Robinson-Huron Treaty territory. He’s a writer\, listener\, speaker\, language learner\, and a martial artist\, holding a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. After working for nearly two decades as a journalist\, mostly for CBC\, and writing fiction in his spare time\, he recently moved to make literature and storytelling his primary focus. He is the author of the short story collection Midnight Sweatlodge (2011)\, the novel Legacy (2014)\, and the national bestseller Moon of the Crusted Snow (2018)\, which is the winner of the 2019 OLA Forest of Reading Evergreen Award and a 2023 Canada Reads Longlist Selection. Moon of the Turning Leaves is his new and much anticipated sequel. DESCRIPTION:MAUREEN MAYHEW is a family doctor\, a clinical professor at UBC\, and a certified leadership coach. She graduated from Hudson High School (’78) and then from McGill in ’86 and has spent three decades providing primary care and leading public health programs across Canada\, Asia and Africa. She currently works for the BC Physician Health Program. A life-changing Doctors Without Borders mission to Afghanistan in 2000 inspired her to spend the next decade supporting Afghans to rebuild their shattered healthcare system\, and to improve maternal and child health in remote settings. THOMSON has appeared in film and theatre across Canada\, as Matthew Cuthbert in Anne With An E\, in the movie Chloe directed by Atom Egoyan\, as Marshall McLuhan in The Message by Jason Sherman and This Was The World by Ellie Moon. As well as being an advocate for the arts\, RH has worked on many history/arts projects. She cut her teeth performing in Toronto and Vancouver clubs and then spent three years honing her craft overseas in Europe and North and West Africa. \nUpon returning to Canada she invested in her songwriting career and immediately received recognition winning the 2019 Toronto Blues Society Talent Search and representing Toronto at the 2020 International Blues Challenge in Memphis. Her EP ‘Three Years’ received significant radio play in Canada\, and her following FACTOR funded album ‘Falling Away From Me” received Canadian radio play and rave\nreviews in Europe. This past year was full of night notes\, performing at Massey Hall as part of the Women’s Blues Revue and being nominated for her first Maple Blues Award. Her latest album\, ‘A Sound in the Dark’ is available now. \nThe Better Half 2-3 pm \nThe Better Half are Sandra Giguère and John Murray\, musicians\, performers and songwriters from Hudson\, Quebec. They have released two albums of original material\, ‘Alibis’ and ‘No Side Is Wrong’. As BH ConneXion\, with drummer Sylvain Chamberland and bassist Mario Orsini\, they released their latest album ‘A Trace of Time’ in October 2022.
