SUMMARY:StoryFest Nahlah Ayed
DESCRIPTION:Greenwood Centre for Living History is delighted to launch StoryFest 2024 by welcoming Nahlah Ayed who has thoroughly researched and engagingly written a story of two heroic individuals who later made their home and raised their children in Hudson\, Quebec\, for a number of years. \nLove\, betrayal\, and a secret war: Nahlah Ayed’s new book is the untold story of two elite agents\, one Canadian\, one British\, who became one of the most decorated couples of World War II. \nOn opposite sides of the pond\, Sonia Butt\, an adventurous young British woman\, and Guy d’Artois\, a French-Canadian soldier and thunderstorm of a man\, are preparing for war. \nFrom different worlds\, their lives first intersect during clandestine training to become agents with Winston Churchill’s secret army\, the Special Operations Executive. As the world’s deadliest conflict to date unfolds\, Sonia and Guy learn how to parachute into enemy territory\, how to kill\, blow up rail lines\, and eventually . . . how to love each other. But not long after their hasty marriage\, their love is tested by separation\, by a titanic invasion—and by indiscretion. \nWriting in vivid\, heart-stopping prose\, Ayed follows Sonia as she plunges into Nazi-occupied France and slinks into black market restaurants to throw off occupying Nazi forces\, while at the same time participating in sabotage operations against them; and as Guy\, in another corner of France\, trains hundreds into a resistance army. \nReconstructed from hours of unpublished interviews and hundreds of archival and personal documents\, the story Ayed tells is about the ravaging costs of war paid for disproportionately by the young. But more than anything\, The War We Won Apart is a story about love: two secret agents who were supposed to land in enemy territory together but were fated to fight the war apart. \nNAHLAH AYED is an award-winning writer\, broadcaster\, and currently producer and host of CBC’s Ideas. For two decades\, Ayed worked in hot zones around the globe—from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq\, to Russia’s annexation of Crimea. Her first book\, A Thousand Farewells\, was a finalist for the 2012 Governor General’s Literary Awards. \nThe War We Won Apart goes on sale May 28th\, 2024\, published by Viking Canada in hardcover (ISBN 9780735242067)  416 pages\, and will be on sale at the StoryFest event. SUMMARY:Music in the Garden with Bob Burman & Geoff Mitchell\, and Lucien Lavoie
DESCRIPTION:Double Bill Tickets please click here: TICKETS \nBob Burman & Geoff Mitchell \nBob Burman\, guitar\, and Geoff Mitchell\, piano\, have been playing together as a duo on and off for the last decade. Their repertoire focuses on the classic period of acoustic jazz – the 50s and 60s. As such such it is no surprise that the duo recordings of Jim Hall and Bill Evans are a major reference for their style and repertoire. Join us for an afternoon of the timeless American songbook delivered with respect for melody and the craft of songwriting. \nLucien Lavoie \nA young flamenco guitarist from Hudson\, Canada\, currently residing in Granada\, Andalusia. Passionate about flamenco\, Lucien went to study guitar at the “Rafael Orozco” Superior Conservatory of Music in Cordoba\, where he is currently in his fourth and final year. He has understood the idiosyncrasies of the Andalusian people\, which he has perfectly integrated\, and this has driven him to improve as a guitarist and composer. \n

SUMMARY:A Morning on Everest - Un matin sur l'Everest
DESCRIPTION:This August 10th\, please join us for a Morning on Everest with Nepali mountaineer Phunjo Lama\, the fastest woman ever to climb the world’s highest mountain. A two time Everest Summiteer\, Phunjo set the woman’s speed ascent record on May 23-4\, 2024\, with a time to the summit of 14 hours\, 31 minutes. She is the first woman to climb Mt. Cho Oyu solo and without oxygen\, and has summited Mts. Lhotse\, Manaslu\, Amdablam and Lobuche\, in the Himalaya\, Denali in Alaska\, plus many lesser peaks internationally. In this fascinating morning of high drama\, Phunjo describes her astonishing rise from an orphaned yak-herder growing up in the extreme remote Tibetan-Nepali border region\, to a modern climbing legend breaking new trail for indigenous women on the world’s highest mountains\, the ‘eight-thousanders’. Recipient of numerous rewards\, Phunko is also her country’s first and only female helicopter long-line sling rescuer— bungeeing off helicopters to pluck stranded climbers from mountains at altitudes barely supporting flight. \nThe event’s Master of Ceremonies is Ottawa-based Everest summiteer and internationally acclaimed outdoor filmmaker and expedition leader Ben Webster\, whose documentaries have aired on ABC\, RDS\, Discovery Channel\, National Geographic\, History Channel\, Travel Channel\, CBC and others. Ben’s credits from five successful Everest expeditions and several decades of travel to Nepal include producing the very first live broadband television broadcast from the summit back to North American networks.

We are providing a beautiful setting for an afternoon of very special open-mic style performances. A donation of $25 per person is suggested. It is by donation for attendance. Even if you can’t attend but want to contribute\, be certain that your contribution will go towards the sustainability of a residence we may have benefitted from as the kindest place that is there for us at some of the hardest times of our lives.
