SUMMARY:A Morning on Everest - Un matin sur l'Everest
DESCRIPTION:This August 10th\, please join us for a Morning on Everest with Nepali mountaineer Phunjo Lama\, the fastest woman ever to climb the world’s highest mountain. A two time Everest Summiteer\, Phunjo set the woman’s speed ascent record on May 23-4\, 2024\, with a time to the summit of 14 hours\, 31 minutes. She is the first woman to climb Mt. Cho Oyu solo and without oxygen\, and has summited Mts. Lhotse\, Manaslu\, Amdablam and Lobuche\, in the Himalaya\, Denali in Alaska\, plus many lesser peaks internationally. In this fascinating morning of high drama\, Phunjo describes her astonishing rise from an orphaned yak-herder growing up in the extreme remote Tibetan-Nepali border region\, to a modern climbing legend breaking new trail for indigenous women on the world’s highest mountains\, the ‘eight-thousanders’. Recipient of numerous rewards\, Phunko is also her country’s first and only female helicopter long-line sling rescuer— bungeeing off helicopters to pluck stranded climbers from mountains at altitudes barely supporting flight. \nThe event’s Master of Ceremonies is Ottawa-based Everest summiteer and internationally acclaimed outdoor filmmaker and expedition leader Ben Webster\, whose documentaries have aired on ABC\, RDS\, Discovery Channel\, National Geographic\, History Channel\, Travel Channel\, CBC and others. Ben’s credits from five successful Everest expeditions and several decades of travel to Nepal include producing the very first live broadband television broadcast from the summit back to North American networks.

SUMMARY:Children's Book Reading with Frank Hicks | Lecture d'un livre jeunesse avec Frank Hicks : Pugsley the Peculiar Puffin 📖
DESCRIPTION:For children of all ages\, Frank Hicks reads his recently released book: Pugsley the Peculiar Puffin on the lawn at Greenwood. This children’s book is based on the true story of a wayward puffin from Newfoundland Canada that somehow landed in Montreal. It is also a story of the people who offered their help\, the environmentalists who offered their expertise and the professionals who offered their time and resources\, all working together to bring this puffin back home. \nWe’ll have copies of the book available to be signed by the author. All proceeds go to Le Nichoir Wild Bird Conservation Centre\, also located in Hudson. Frank’s antique toy collection will complementarily be on display for any curious attendees.

SUMMARY:StoryFest 2022: Iain Reid
DESCRIPTION:We round out our offering for the 2022 StoryFest season with Iain Reid\, a novelist\, memoirist and screenwriter from Ontario who won the RBC Taylor Emerging Writer Award in 2015. His latest novel\, We Spread was released to great acclaim at the end of September. We Spread explores conformity\, art\, productivity\, relationships\, and what it means to grow old. “Reid combines magnetic character development with clipped\, eerie prose in this masterfully crafted psychological thriller that will keep the reader guessing until the very last word on the final page.” — Booklist \nTickets are $20.00 each and can be purchased electronically here and are available at Que de Bonnes Choses (484-D Main\, Hudson) or at Centre Décor Hudson (521 Main\, Hudson). \nWe thank Maison Rose and Hudson Village Theatre for their sponsorship towards this Event.

SUMMARY:StoryFest 2022: Writers' Workshop with David Heti
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: AS OF NOVEMBER 2\, THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT!\nNo\, Seriously! Comedy Writing. \nYou might laugh\, but this five-hour immersion (with breaks) will be a combination of theory and workshopping. The goal is for the participants to deepen their appreciation of humour\, learn how better to transfer their own sense of humour to the page\, and in general become stronger\, more confident\, nuanced\, discerning and just plain funnier writers no matter what their writing genre or level of experience. \nBeginning with a survey of classic theories of humour examining the essence of the comedic\, the workshop will then take a critical analysis of several exemplary comedic works across various literary forms. Time will then be spent on in-class writing (and re-writing) exercises\, as well as a discussion of general comedy writing strategies and approaches. Students are encouraged to bring along any pieces of writing they are working on\, but this is by no means essential. \nDavid Heti is a stand-up comic and humour writer who has toured throughout North America\, released two comedy albums\, and written for the CBC and The Comedy Network. He teaches comedy writing at McGill and Toronto’s Flying Books School of Reading and Writing. He also holds degrees in Philosophy and Law. \nThe workshop takes place at Greenwood and includes a light lunch. Space is limited. \nTickets are $80.00 each and can be purchased electronically here. If you would like to buy this ticket as a cash transaction\, please contact us at: history@greenwoodcentre.org or 450-458-5396. \nWe thank Cardinal Hudson for their sponsorship towards this event.

SUMMARY:StoryFest 2022: Debra Thompson - In Person
DESCRIPTION:Hudson’s Community Centre will be where StoryFest will eagerly welcome esteemed scholar Debra Thompson. A McGill associate professor of Political Science\, Dr. Thompson is a renowned scholar of the politics of race and holds a Canada Research Chair in Racial Inequality in Democratic Societies. Her earlier book\, The Schematic State: Race\, Transnationalism\, and the Politics of the Census\, received three major awards from the American Political Science Association. She has also published numerous articles in scholarly journals and is a regular commentator in print and on television on the state of race and racism in Canada and the United States. She now lives in Montreal. \nIn The Long Road Home\, her just released book\, Dr. Thompson follows the roots of Black identities in North America and the routes taken by those who have crisscrossed the world’s longest undefended border in search of freedom and belonging. It is a moving personal story and a vital examination of the nuances of racism in the United States and Canada. Above all\, this book is about the power of freedom and the dreams that link and inspire Black people across borders from the perspective of one who has deep ties to\, critiques of\, and hope for both countries. \nTickets are $20.00 each and can be purchased electronically here and are available at Que de Bonnes Choses (484-D Main\, Hudson) or at Centre Décor Hudson (521 Main\, Hudson) as cash purchases only. \nWe thank Frank Royle for his sponsorship towards this event.
